An event driven program is a program that responds it action performed by an external force i.e a user. In MS Word an obvious event is textual input in the GUI , The visual document in MS Word is a virtual object, which when a key is pressed the visual representation of that key is portrayed on the document object. There are other events that a user can perform such as selection boxes, menus, which are all Event Listeners, i.e they listen for a event and when that event occurs, such as select font, then the event handler (programmed) performs a programmed action i.e changed the font from times new roman to arial.

Well you can look Xp as an event Driven S/W in one way but OS is much more than this. XP responds to user events and performs actions on it. but Xp has much more and major tasks than listening to events and responding them. One of them would be managing H/W allocating appropriate resources.
