Is modulus of elasticity the same as shear modulus?

0

Modulus of elasticity E and Shear modulus are not the same.Modulus of elasticity E is ability of the material to withstand bending, compressive and tensile stresses, whilst the shear modulus is the ability of the material to withstand tearing (shearing stresses). However depending on a type of material a relationship between E and G can be established. The shear modulus is defined as the ratio of shear force to shear strain, and is defined by:- G = E / 2(1 + ѵ) (E is Modulus of elasticity (N/m or Pa); ѵ is Poisson’s ratio) Hence, the modulus of elasticity and Poisson’s ratio are all you need, assuming the material is in pure shear in the loading plane.
