Is NRCPR data severity adjusted?
The term “severity adjustment” could refer to a several different issues, for example, the way we compare facilities. Will a small rural hospital be compared with an urban tertiary care center, or will it be compared with other ‘like’ facilities? Currently, the comparison groups are based on the ‘type’ of facility (primary patient focus of Pediatric, Adult, or Mixed patients). However, it is our intention to increase the number and types of comparison groups as soon as participation levels support it. For example, we would like to break out the teaching facilities from the non-teaching facilities and/or consider the size (number of beds). Severity adjustment can also refer to the condition of the patient. For example, in trauma there are “severity scoring” models that quantitatively describe severity, making comparisons of outcome “fair.” Severity scoring as it relates to in-hospital resuscitation does not currently exist.
