Is SALT the only difference between freshwater and saltwater aquariums.?
There are loads of differences. In a marine tank your parameters must me measured differently and must be calculated differently, plus there are way more parameters that need to be measured when in a marine tank – and are normally at much higher levels. An example of this is that calcium in freshwater should only be around 5mg/l while in the marine environment the calcium should be between 400-450mg/l – a lot of difference. Salt is obviously the most common difference, but remember the brackish environment as well, a marine tank the salinity or specific gravity must be around 1.022 – 1.024 with some corals preferring 1.024 – 1.026, it all depends, brackish is normally 1.016-1.019, in a freshwater tank there should be no detectalbe salininty. Substrate is another big difference, gravel is not suited for a marine aquarium as it messed with the pH and the nitrates, normally with a freshwater it is not as important if the pH is adjusted slightly, in a marine there is very little room for m
