Is South African Tourism using the World Cup to sell South Africa?
Well we are not necessarily using the World Cup to sell South Africa; we are using the World Cup as a hook but we have actually been selling South Africa before then. We are highlighting different cultures you can find in South Africa, the cuisine we have, the infrastructure and the various things one can do; the different pleasure activities. The World Cup so happened and we then used it to say here is something else other than the other things that you can get and do in the country. Part of our discussions are not only about the World Cup but we are also saying let’s find ways with which we can package our deal to ensure that we are able to capture some people even after the World Cup. It seems the South Africa Tourism and Local Organizing Committee are not carrying the local media along in the campaign because when you go to South Africa and you read the papers, what you see are the words crime, crime, crime? The local press has become very cynical for reasons that are unknown to us
