Is taking up martial arts a good choice for a full body workout and improving muscle tone?

Significantly so. If you do the stretches and meditations in addition to the sparring and katas or other sequential practices, you’ll find that it is not only good for the body, but also the mind. You’ll find you are more centered and focused, easier breath and easier movements through day-to-day activities.

As with any sport, the effort you put into it is proportional to the benefits you can gain from it. If you only go to a twice-weekly class and spend most of your time just doing the basic movements and not breaking a sweat, you’re not getting a real workout.

Doing the situps and pushups that most classes require will be a good way to build your core muscles and upper body strength. Punching bags are a good workout, so use all of your dojo or martial arts center’s resources to fully build on your muscles and tone up.

Ehh….you’ll get by, Martial Arts doesn’t build muscle so much as improve technique and help cardio, I suppose weight training is better for muscle tone, but that combined with the cardio from martial arts really improves muscle tone a lot, just don’t rely solely on Martial Arts for Cardio, you won’t be attending class every day.

It depends on how you approach it. Most martial artists I know (me included) also run, lift weights, or do some other form of exercise in addition to martial arts.

Fighting is the best cardio and probably the best muscle workout you can do. You’ll need to take an intense martial art like Tae Kwan Do. Maybe try Judo? That’s a good martial art for women since you can take down opponents bigger than you.
