Is the 300 hours of training required by Senate Bill 103 new training or just expanded training?
The 300 hours for all new juvenile correctional officers and direct care staff will consist of at least three new training modules, including: Understanding TYC Youth, Understanding the Juvenile Justice System, and The Prison Rape Elimination Action (PREA). In addition to the three new modules, SB 103 outlines 15 topics that training must cover. Many of these areas were part of the original pre-service training. However, the curriculum has been updated and adapted to conform with agency reform. Classroom instruction will increase from 80 hours to 140 hours. On–the-Job Training (OJT) has been expanded and will provide the remaining 160 hours of training before a direct care staff member is eligible to provide sole-supervision of youth.
