Is the computer chip actually part of a 97 Mazda Protege engine?

6 months ago Mazda put a new engine in my Protege and yesterday the check engine light came on. This past week I had noticed the car smelled like it was running hot but the indicators on the panel were all fine. When the light came on we noticed in my parking spot that it had been leaking some oil. We called Mazda and they said it was OK to drive and brought it to them the next day. The light had gone out after driving it for 5 minutes but after about 10 minutes when I had to slow down and pay at the toll booth it started to pour out white smoke from the tail pipe for a few seconds. Mazda tells us that it is the computer chip and that has nothing to do with the engine itself, so therefore, it is not covered by the warranty. The oil leak was caused by a dirty oil filter he said and could be fixed by an oil change, which was do, but had just been done by them and was not that overdue and not that many miles have been put on it. I’m just afraid they are taking advantage of me. (asked by C
