Personal opinion… yes, the Standard can be used for anything from blues, jazz, and rock all the way up(or down) the list to Gospil and country. If you want a really good blues tone, take a page out of Clapton’s “trick book” and put the pick-up selector switch in the middle position. Roll the tone back on your bridge pick-up. This will give you a tone similar to Clapton’s “crying woman” sound heard on many of Cream’s recordings. While the Standard is a massive chunk of wood, the payoff is an incredible amount of sustain.
