Thank you letters show thought and good business etiquette. Its another chance to impress the job interviewer and say why you are good for the job. The thank you letter is more personal than a high school resume or cover letter since you now know the interviewer. Comment on how you would enjoy working there. Since only 15% of job interview candidates send thank-you letters, the interviewer will remember you.
