I don’t think so. The Left had asked the government, why it doesn’t want a jpc probe. Till now it has not been able to give a credible answer. How long will the impasse in Parliament continue? That will depend entirely on the government. No government has ever agreed to a jpc demand. The JPC that formed with the least amount of disruption was in 14 days. The longest, of course, was Bofors in 45 days. Will a jpc probe be able to reveal more than what is already known through the cag report and the phone tapes? JPC goes beyond an investigation. The job of investigation is left to the cbi and various other agencies. They can identify the culprit and the law of the land can take care of the punishment. A JPC’s job, on the other hand, is to try and examine how the system was manipulated. Once that is done, it can suggest how new regulation, or if necessary, new laws should be put in place.
