Is the “slippery slope” argument overrated?

It is well known that the SS argument (cf. the thin end of the wedge) is a lazy and sloppy way of opposing any argument. It is not a real argument, but a tactic (cn. argumentum ad hominen). However, it does have a place in practical morality and behaviour. One could argue that if something is permitted, it could lead to something worse.
