Is the USDOT mandating a particular system design?
No. The USDOT is mandating that states and regions follow a process of systems engineering, use USDOT adopted standards, and work with all relevant stakeholders in their area. The outcome of the process is a regional ITS architecture, which guides system design. The National ITS Architecture supports a variety of system designs and is flexible enough to support both distributed and centralized systems.
