A There are many brands of “free-range” eggs available these days, but if you wish to buy eggs that are produced in the most humane conditions, I would purchase them from health food shops that sell eggs produced on small farms. Some of these small suppliers are trying hard to do the right thing by their chickens and they are relatively well looked after. I would support these farms in preference to the much larger commercial “free-range” or “barn-laid” eggs (e.g. RSPCA-endorsed Liberty eggs and Mrs McKechie). (Although these are far preferable to traditional Farm Pride eggs which are produced by hens in battery cages.) Regardless of the type of eggs you buy, if you are concerned about animal welfare/ethics you need to be aware that half of the chicks that are hatched to provide laying chickens are inevitably male, and are therefore unwanted (they don’t lay eggs).
