Is there any effective preventative treatment for a dog with frequent ear infections?”

Just one of my Dalmatians gets irritatied ears, constantly. I can tell he’d ready for a treatment when he walks with his head tilted to one side. Because of the foul odor, I was sure it had to be an infection or infestitation of ear mites or something. Our Vet has examined him, said there were not ear mites and no infection, just irritation. I found that the perfumed ear wash from the Vet seemed to increase the irritation. I ordered some wash from Drs.Foster and Smith catalog…it works much better. Every week or so, I take a large cotton ball, saturate it with ear wash, put it into his ear canal, close the ear flap and massage the fluid into his ear. (he love this). Remove the cotton ball and let him shake his head. Then I can remove most of the softened black/brown matter from his ear and repeat if necessary. Then, dry gently with a paper towel and apply some store brand hydrocortozone cream into his ears. I can give Spike relief from the discomfort, control it, but not cure the prob
