Is Windows 2000 Server a better Network Operating System than UNIX, NetWare, Linux and so forth?

It depends on what you’re trying to do. Windows 2000 Server is a general-purpose NOS with built-in networking; it should be more than adequate for most users. Administrators of very large (1000+ user) networks will want to look at Windows 2000 Advanced Server or Windows 2000 Data Center Server. All three flavors of Windows 2000 Server are designed to fully exploit Microsoft’s new Active Directory Service, which competes with Novell’s NDS and comparable systems. How well it will work is a good question; but we’ve noted in print that while Win2000 is effectively the fifth main version of Windows NT, this is the first version of Active Directory. Consider a pilot project before rolling it out on a corporate-wide basis.
