Entering elementary enrollments are declining, reflecting the aging demographics of the U.S. population. That is helping reduce class sizes in itself, along with earlier initiatives taken by the District within the current schools. The District has not quantified the cost increases associated with the proposed new school, but they’re substantial — and major items like energy, pensions and health benefits, have been rising sharply. Now is not the time to be taking on large and unquantified costs, when educational improvements from further class size reduction are very iffy.
