Ive seen on TV that bees are disappearing. Whats that all about?
Lately honeybees have received a lot of media attention due to a strange affliction that has been dubbed Colony Collapse Disorder or CCD. The main symptom is that the bee population declines from a healthy 50,000 to 60,000 bees in a hive to a paltry few hundred in what appears to be an otherwise healthy hive. There is much research going on to determine the cause, but at this time there is no smoking gun. But there seems to be no end of theories. One of the more widespread explanations was that cell phones are causing it. That has since been totally debunked. Other explanations include pesticides, migratory beekeeping practices, monocultures, and foreign pathogens. While none of these are singly causing CCD, the combination of these and other things may be creating “death by 1000 cuts”. Bees are equipped to handle many stressors, but beyond a certain limit, they simply cannot thrive and start to decline.
