My doctor mentioned chorionic villus sampling (CVS); is this a test I need?

Most doctors recommend chorionic villus sampling for women who are over the age of 34 (if the baby will be delivered after the age of 35). Doctors also indicate that CVS should be undertaken by pregnant women who have a child with Down’s syndrome, are carriers of either an autosomal recessive disorder such as Tay-Sachs disease or sex-linked disorder such as hemophilia. Neural tube defects cannot be detected through CVS testing. If you have had a child with a neural tube defect your doctor will recommend amniocentesis.
