Answer Rick, Thank you for you question. The kicking team be it a free kick or scrimmage kick may never advance a kick. Thus on a kick off the kicking team may not advance the kick. They may recover it and that causes the ball to become dead in the kicking teams possession. As far as advancing a “recovered kick” – if the Receiving team has recovered the ball and then fumbles, then the kicking team can advance the ball as they would be advancing a fumble not a kick. Yes, the offensive team can have more than 7 players on the line of scrimmage. They must have a minimum of 7 players on the line of scrimmage with a minimum of 5 players numbered 50-79.
