If the OSX system is installed on a Macintosh with on-board SCSI bus (beige case machines), the OSX system does not detect connected SCSI scanners correctly. Thus SilverFast won’t find any known devices. Solution: plug a SCSI host adapter (PCI card) to your Mac and connect the scanner to that card.
