It’s not always good for a manufacturer to follow the rules of the ATX norm though because it could sometimes cause problems with various new technologies such as graphic chips. So it happened not too long ago when a certain graphics chip manufacturer brought out a new chip that needed much more power from the 12V rail than the actual ATX norm allowed. Many companies overruled the specification and built the power supplies according to own rules. In this way there were first single rail 12V power supplies in the market. The problem with demanding graphics cards was solved. The user needs to decide by himself now if he wants to buy a single or multi rail 12V power supply.
