In the strategic work I’ve done, I look at the internal environment (firm’s competitive capabilities, strengths, weaknesses, its market position) and see how that information aligns with the industry’s strengths, weaknesses, competitive capabilities, and the market position. I actually also try to include a look at competing technologies or industries or markets. And then I look for opportunities and threats for both the internal and external. Try to do this in a table to see the similarities or contrasts. For example, you are a printing company. Some of your strengths are your brand identity for quality is high. You are a large company and you have a low-cost advantage due to your equipment.
