Regarding low prices, what problems are facing the Vietnamese shrimp industry?
Shrimp prices in the world have been dropping in recent years. A recent study by the Fisheries Economy and Planning Institute and a British expert predicts that shrimp prices will fall to VND30,000-60,000 per kilogram, depending on the size. So shrimp producers must seek ways to reduce costs, ensure food safety and turn out products with better quality than those of competitors in order to survive in the global marketplace. What should Vietnam’s fisheries industry do to adapt to the global trend of integration and competition? I think the first thing is to develop concentrated, large-scale and well-managed shrimp farming areas and to diversify breeding to include different kinds of shrimp. Second, biotechnologies should be used widely in shrimp breeding and farming to improve the quality of breeder shrimp. In addition, the use of harmful chemicals and antibiotics in shrimp raising should be eliminated to protect the environment. The development of community management based on advanced
