Varnishing gouache paintings is not recommended because it drastically changes the depth, darkness and finish of the painting. A varnish will also sink into the paper, discoloring and embrittling it. A gouache painting is best preserved in a frame under glass, ensure there is a mount or spacer between the work and the glass.
