Should I be using a Federal Tax ID number rather than a social security number?

Sending out Social Security numbers sets you up for identity theft of your personal stuff. That’s not to say that someone could not make a run at your identity with your EIN, but at least they would have to go through another layer. Plus, it helps to segregate business from personal stuff, such as bank accounts. Sources: My opinion.
