Should I divide my hostas, daylilies and peonies in the fall or wait until next spring?
It’s fine to divide and move all three of these plants in the fall. The warm soil temperatures and cool air temperatures of autumn are ideal for promoting root growth and helping the plants to quickly re-establish. In fact, fall is the only proper time to divide peonies and many early spring bloomers. Take care when replanting peonies, because placing their thick roots any deeper than an inch below soil surface will create “blind eyes” and prevent them from blooming.
