Should I use rolls instead of batts?

Lou writes from somewhere in the U.S.: “I have 89 in. vertical inside stud. Should I use R-13 continuous 32′ roll vs R-13 93in batts? Also, they always recommend not to press insulation down, yet I see batts packages at the store pressed together!” Answer: Since both products are R 13, consider ease of application. It may be easier to get batts into position. Price may be another factor to consider. The insulation is compression packaged for ease of shipping and handling but recovers or springs back to its intended thickness when the packages are opened. But this is by design and recovery is one of the quality tests preformed routinely at the factory to make sure Owens Corning insulation will perform as needed. We do not recommend compression of product during installation as this will result in reduced R-value.
