Should Religious Education be taught in schools?
lol, assignment questions on whether a subject is justified to be taught in school For: encourages awareness of other religions and cultures – reduce fears enduces principles that are aligned with laws in most countries encourages people to have an open mind encourages people to look into recent religious events and the reasoning behind it can encourage people to pursue a religion Against: Unproductive – in the sense it does not train you in any vital skills for your later life like maths or english If people have prior and reinforced bias to certain cultures, educating them about the religions would intially provide more means to enduce racism It does not necessarily stimulate interest in pupils to learn about religion if it’s taught badly (by opinion, religious education can be interesting) It’s based on faiths and beliefs and not facts. If faiths are to be pursued, religious practices would take place in communial places of worship Does not necessarily stimulate to improve one’s int
Originally it was the churches who ran schools. They then handed over the running of things to Government. This in the United Kingdom. RE was a subjected protected by law; which meant that it had to be taught. Even now, all UK schools are required to teach RE up to GCSE level. It is good to teach about religion from a social and moral stand point. kids are exposed to thoughts on life and morals and learn about each other’s cultures. As a Christian I have no problem that my children learn what other religions believe. It helps them to understand other children and to take away the stigma of the unknown. What I do not like is when Christians are made to feel like they are causing offence when Christmas and Easter are celebrated; yet others find no problem celebrating their festivals and are make no apologies for their beliefs. No-one changes the meaning of Hindu and Muslim festivals, yet we are supposed to leave Christ out of Christmas and the cross out of Easter.
I think it should definitely. I’m an atheist personally but I can honestly say since leaving school Religious Education has been one of the most valuable subjects for living in the real world. In life you rarely have to quote poetry or use maths formulae, but you will go about your life meeting and working with people from different racial and religious backgrounds and I think it’s important to understand people on that level. Religion is a huge part of so many people’s lives and I think it’s important to understand something that drives such a huge part of the world, even if you don’t believe in God in any form. I was lucky though, even though I went to a Catholic school they were very fair about teaching both science and religion.
