Under POS, can a primary care physician refer a patient to an out-of-network specialist or does CIGNA discourage this type of referral?
Referrals can be made to out-of-network providers only if there is no provider in the CIGNA network who can deliver care/treatment for a specific condition. The referral would have to be authorized by CIGNA for in-network benefits to apply. In-network providers are responsible for securing authorization to use an out-of-network provider.
