The President was entirely correct in commuting Scooter Libby’s sentence. The Libby prosecution reflects the failings of appointing special counsels in political cases. Once appointed, they simply cannot conclude their investigation without indicting SOMEONE. To do so would be to admit failure. Fitzgerald knew who the leaker was from the very beginning. He also knew that the disclosure of Valerie Plame’s identity was not a crime. He continued his investigation into a crime that did not exist because to do otherwise would be to admit that he never should have been appointed in the first place. Who among us is going to say that our job is a mistake?
