The storm-drainage systems in each drainage area are designed to handle low-intensity rainfalls from the entire drainage area. In addition, the storm-drainage systems in newer communities store water temporarily on specially designed streets and ponds to protect communities at lower elevations from high-intensity rainfalls. In older communities that are subject to flooding from high-intensity rainfalls, The City of Calgary Wastewater makes improvements on a priority basis. These improvement projects are funded by the Storm Drainage Upgrade Charge. Additional funding from the Canada-Alberta National Infrastructure Program has accelerated the construction of many of these improvements.
