During the Renaissance it was the custom for Florentine women who were about to married to have their portraits painted. The Mona Lisa is most likely a portrait of the wife of a rich silk merchant in Florence, Italy. It was painted by Leonardo da Vinci about 1503 and finished a few years later. Before the Renaissance few portraits of people were painted because painting was mostly done for religious reasons, for instance for church altars or as murals for churches, abbeys and monasteries. The Catholic church had a near monopoly on art. During the Renaissance more secular subjects, especially portraits, could be created. I hope that this has been a help to you.
