Friday May 23, 2008 Britains “Independent” newspaper this week reported a story about the Sistine Chapel, home of famous artwork by Michelangelo, which I, for one, had never heard before. It claims that two men – Donato Bramante, an architect and Raphael, himself a famous painter who were friends of Leonardo da Vinci, with whom Michelangelo was engaged in a public battle of words, persuaded the Pope to offer Michelangelo the job in the belief that the artist, best known for being a sculptor, would fail and hugely embarrass himself.
