Actually, springs can rust over time, and oiling (or greasing) will make them last longer, too. The trick is that you need to get the oil in between the coils. The best way to do this is to have a helper (or weight) sit on the trampoline near the spring, until you can see a bit of air in between. Add a bit of oil to the spring in a line along the top edge, and have your helper bounce up and down to distribute the oil. It will take a while to get them all, but you will be happier for it! Almost any oil will do, but machine oils and greases will last the longest. Vegetable oils can go rancid over time. Mineral oil is too light, and will wash off quickly in the rain. Grease will last the longest in the rain, but can/will stain clothes, and you have to force it in there with a small brush or something. I’d recommend car oil, and re-applying it every so often. It’s a mid-weight oil, you probably have some readily at hand, it’s cheap, and you can easily wipe off the excess so it doesn’t stai
