Yes, there were a few slaves throughout the northern colonies but the greatest numbers by far were in the southern colonies. In the British colonies slavery was legal but was not legal in Britain! By the early1800’s, after the Revolutionary War, slavery was outlawed in many of the new states in the North. People in the northern colonies, in large numbers, always considered slavery to be immoral and not consistent with their religious beliefs. What was more common in the northern states was another form of slavery called “indentured servants”. Under this arrangement, a person in the Americas would pay the ticket for someone from Ireland or Britain to come to America. This indentured servant would then live with their “sponsor” and become their servant for a period of time, usually 2 or 3 years.
