What’s better for office use: laptops or desktop computers?

I would say that 8 times out of 10 building an office around desktop computers is the smarter move. Desktops are easier to maintain, easier to upgrade, more versatile, and they generally give you more bang for your buck. The latter is especially important if you expect your employees to handle hardware-intensive work — think game design, video editing, graphics rendering, etc.

Laptops are usually more expensive than comparable desktops because all their components have to be miniaturized. And they are typically not designed to have parts swapped or upgraded; some modern laptops aren’t even designed to be opened. Thanks to that, laptop maintenance is both difficult and expensive. Desktops often end up lasting longer with fewer maintenance costs.

Of course, laptops do have one major advantage. They’re mobile, and your employee can take their workstation home or on trips with them. You should choose laptops if that’s a priority for your company.

Whatever you choose, make sure you’re not paying for more hardware than you actually need. If you’re not sure what to buy, try working with an IT procurement services provider.
