What are alien or non-native invasives?
These are non-native species whose introduction and/or spread threaten biological diversity. Invasive plants can cause competition for nutrients, light and space and can alter plant populations and communities in terrestrial and freshwater situations. Most non-native species pose no threat to native plants, and indeed many naturalised non-natives represent important additions to our flora, but the threat posed by the invasive non-natives is recognised as the second-most important threat to biological diversity after habitat destruction and decline.
