What are Innocence Projects?
There is a national Innocence Project and many state programs modeled on the national program (se State Links: Innocence Programs [DNA]). Innocence Projects are typically nonprofit legal clinics that are designed to exonerate inmates using the latest in DNA technologies. These programs are used only if it is determined that forensic DNA testing will possibly shed new light onto specific cases. It is noted that many of the projects’ clients had exhausted all other legal resources. Innocence Projects also focus on compensation laws at the state levels. According to the Innocence Project Web site, 28 states do not compensate exonerated inmates following their release into society. The national Innocence Project program is attempting to strengthen compensation in Pennsylvania, Texas, California, and Florida. The following link is from the California Innocence Project. It is an example of an Innocence Project Screening questionnaire.
