Mail lists and discussion forums are discussion mechanisms. A mail list is normally associated with a project team, used to facilitate work between geographically distributed individuals. A discussion forum is typically used for targeted discussions on specific topics, or as a support mechanism. There are many similarities between the two discussion mechanisms and a wide variety of opinions as to which is better to use in a given scenario. The java.net mailing lists are based on CollabNet’s Community Edition software tools, while the discussion forums are either based on the Jive platform or CollabNet, depending on where you are on the site.
