Polypropylene is a synthetic polymer of propylene monomers. Named for its versatility, polypropylene is a lightweight thermoplastic that is polymerized from propylene and has a methyl group branching off of every other carbon along its molecular backbone. Because the most common form of polypropylene has the methyl groups all on one side of the carbon backbone, polypropylene molecules tend to be highly aligned and compact, giving this thermoplastic the properties of durability and chemical resistance.
