What are scaling and root planing?
Scaling and root planing are generally the first treatments for periodontal disease. The patient’s gums can be anesthetized for comfort, and with a technique called scaling, the hygienist removes hardened plaque below the gum line. Root planing involves smoothing root surfaces to reduce rough areas, where plaque tends to build up. Scaling and root planing work best for early-stage gum disease. In many patients, this treatment, along with good dental hygiene and regular professional care, halts gum disease and prevents recurrence.
