They are NOT the same thing. There are three kinds of heat transfer between one object and another. (1) Conduction — transfer through direct physical contact (2) Convection — transfer through a fluid medium (liquid or gas) (3) Radiative — transfer without any need for a medium (this is how light moves) Sooo, examples!! (A) Conduction. (1) If you have a pot of boiling water, and you put a metal ladle into it, and just stand there holding onto the spoon… the spoon will get hot, transferring heat directly through the solid spoon and to your hand (2) You stick a poker in the fireplace, and the poker gets hot, and eventually heat moves up it so much that you can’t grab onto it, and just have to stand there looking silly because you can’t stoke the fire where you’re trying to make out (B) Convection.
