What Are the Advantages of a Sit-On-Top Kayak?
Overview A sit-on-top (SOT) kayak is an air-filled fiberglass- or plastic-hulled kayak with a molded deck-top seat instead of the inside-hull seat of traditional (sit-inside) kayaks. SOT kayaks have several advantages that make them preferable, especially for beginners and kayakers who fish, surf or scuba dive from their kayaks. Self-Rescue Sit-on-top kayaks don’t require the kayaker to perform a roll to recover from a capsize. SOT hulls are sealed and don’t fill with water, so even beginners can recover with relative ease by righting the kayak and climbing back on top. Any water that has filled depressions on the kayak deck simply drains out of scupper holes.
