What are the basic causes of cataracts?
Everyone develops cataracts as they grow older. Aging and other factors (such as trauma or certain diseases or medications) can cause cloudy areas in the lens. Cataracts usually develop slowly and without pain or redness. As a cataract develops, your vision may become blurred. Other symptoms of cataract may include frequent changes in the power of your glasses, change in color vision, glare and poor night vision. In cataract surgery, the cloudy natural lens is removed from the eye and replaced with a permanent intraocular lens implant (IOL).
