What are the benefits of raised garden beds?

0

We gave raised garden beds, and one big benefit is not having to worry about weeds!!!! They also provide good drainage, and prevent slugs, and other crawling insects from overpowering your garden.  Although they may still get inside the garden bed, it will not be as much as if they were totally on the ground.

It also helps with back strain.

They are especially  beneficial if you have hard soil, or soil that is not ideal for growing. You don’t have to till or dig up the dirt (a labor intensive process)
Easier to control weeds
You can use your own specialized soil if  you wish as well.
Easier to grow root vegetables, they require well worked soil to grow striaght (IE carrots) a raised bed would provide that.

If you use a raised garden bed, then you will have to bend over less since it won’t be at ground level.  This could be a great comfort for people with back problems.  Another pro would be that you don’t have to worry about any unwanted fertilizer or other chemicals draining into your garden from the street or you neighbor’s yard, they could be spraying poison in their yard to kill weeds or unwanted grass.  The type of soil your plants grow in will then be your decision 100%.  Another plus is, it makes it easier to turn your raised garden bed into a raised garden bed green house.  Simply bend a few pvc pipes or sticks across the bed in an arch formation and tie some plastic over them to create your greenhouse.  Also will protect your plants from the frost on cold nights!
