Periodontitis is a common infection of the gums that usually results from lack of poor oral hygiene. As it progresses, it destroys the soft tissue and bone that supports the teeth, which can ultimately result in tooth loss. If left untreated, it can also result in more serious health problems, such as an increase in heart attacks and strokes.
