What are the contaminating atmospheric emissions (CO, NOx, SOx, COV..) in bioethanol combustion against petrol?

The International Energy Agency (Biofuels for Transport April 2004) has published the results of analyses, experiences and research carried out in recent years asserting the addition of bioethanol to petrol reduces vehicle exhaust emission of CO (up to 25%), hydrocarbons (HC or VOC), particles and SO2 . Regarding the blend impact on NOx emission there are no conclusions. However, evaporative VOC emission may increase due to greater pressure of the petrol-bioethanol blend produced on adding bioethanol, this can be eliminated reducing the petrol base vapour pressure. The IEA report asserts adding bioethanol to petrol increases the emission of toxic agents like acetaldehyde and formaldehyde, although information is limited. Nevertheless, this addition reduces the emission of more contaminating and hazardous agents to the air, with cancerous effects like benzene, butadiene and toluene. Information similar to this appears in the aforementioned Worldwatch Institute (Biofuels for Transport, M
