What are the differences between Asian and African elephants?
African elephants are much larger. They usually weigh in the 12,000-pound range. The African elephant’s ears are also larger in proportion to the elephant’s body. African elephants have flat heads while Asians have 2 lobes on top of the head. Asian females do not have visible tusks; they have very small tusks called “tushes” that seldom protrude past the upper lip. Both African males and females have visible tusks. On Asians, the tip of the trunk has 1 small appendage – like a finger. On Africans, there are 2 – one on top and one on the bottom.
