What are the different types of sword fighting that are in NO relation to fencing?
Modern sport fencing is performed with an épée, foil, or saber. These are all one-handed weapons. The épée and foil are strictly thrust weapons, where the tip must strike perpendicular (or nearly so) to the target. Saber is a cutting and thrusting weapon, where the scoring touch can be either with the tip or the edge of the blade. Contrasting sword fighting that bears no relation to sport fencing would involve two-handed blades, or a combination of blade and buckler or dagger. Classical, Western two-handed bladed weapons include the longsword and polearm, for example, the halberd. Kendo is a widely practiced swordplay originating in Japan. It uses a bamboo sword that resembles a katana. I don’t know how to characterize the type of sword fighting that are not based on fencing techniques.
